Key takeaways

  1. Search the number in your Chats tab: WhatsApp lets you open a chat if the number uses WhatsApp, and offers to invite it if it does not.
  2. Opening https://wa.me/ followed by the number in international format, with no plus sign and no leading zero, opens a chat only when that number has an active WhatsApp account.
  3. WhatsApp has no public reverse lookup: you see a name, photo or last seen only if privacy settings allow it, and bulk checker tools break WhatsApp's terms.

To check if a number is on WhatsApp, type it into the search bar of your Chats tab: if the number uses WhatsApp you can open a chat with it, and if it does not, WhatsApp offers to invite it instead, according to its Help Center page How to find and invite contacts (read on November 4, 2026). From any browser, https://wa.me/ followed by the number does the same check. WhatsApp offers no public reverse lookup: beyond "this number uses WhatsApp", what you see depends on the other person's privacy settings.

A search for a "WhatsApp number lookup" or a "WhatsApp number checker" can mean three different things: verify one contact, check a number without saving it, or validate a whole customer list before a campaign. This guide covers the four checks built into WhatsApp, what they cannot reveal, and why bulk checker tools get numbers banned.

1. Search the number in WhatsApp

This is the quickest check on a phone, and it is documented in WhatsApp's Help Center under "Chat to someone not saved as a contact":

  1. On iPhone, go to the Chats tab, tap the New chat icon (the plus in a circle), and type the phone number in the search bar.
  2. On Android, go to the Chats or Calls tab, tap the search bar, and type the phone number.
  3. If the number is already using WhatsApp, tap it (iPhone) or tap Chat (Android) to open the conversation.
  4. If the number does not use WhatsApp, you see an Invite option next to it instead.

Type the number in full international format: a plus sign, the country code, then the number without its leading zero. WhatsApp's own example for a US contact is +1 408 XXX XXXX (How to add an international phone number).

The wa.me link works from any browser and does not touch your contacts. The steps are in the next section.

3. Save the number and look for it in WhatsApp

WhatsApp identifies which of your contacts use it when they are synced with your phone's address book. Contacts that do not use WhatsApp yet are listed under Invite to WhatsApp when you start a new chat (How to find and invite contacts). You can also save a number from inside WhatsApp: Chats, then the New chat icon, then New contact. A contact added this way is saved to WhatsApp only by default, not to your phone's address book (About WhatsApp contacts).

4. For a customer list: the delivery status

A business that messages opted-in customers through the WhatsApp Business API learns which numbers are reachable from the delivery status of each message. This is covered in the API section below.

The wa.me link is the WhatsApp checker that lives inside WhatsApp itself, and it is free. It relies on the official click-to-chat feature: WhatsApp's Help Center says that as long as you know a person's number and they have an active WhatsApp account, the link opens a chat with them, on your phone or on WhatsApp Web.

  1. Take the number in full international format: country code, then the number, with no plus sign, no spaces, no dashes and no leading zero. A French number becomes 33612345678, a US number becomes 14155551234.
  2. Put it after https://wa.me/, so https://wa.me/33612345678.
  3. Paste it into any browser and press enter.

If the number has an active WhatsApp account, a chat window opens (on mobile the app opens, on desktop it opens WhatsApp Web or the desktop app). If no chat opens, one of two things is true: the number is not on WhatsApp, or you formatted it wrong. WhatsApp's own example is to use https://wa.me/1XXXXXXXXXX, not https://wa.me/+001-(XXX)XXXXXXX, so double-check the country code before concluding the number is missing. If the person is simply not on WhatsApp, a regular text still reaches them: on an iPhone it goes out as a blue iMessage or as a green bubble, explained in why your texts are green.

The link does not save the contact, and nothing reaches the other person unless you send a message. It is the right tool for a one-off check.

Check a number without saving it

Both the Chats tab search and the wa.me link check a number without adding it to your contacts. If you also want to start the conversation, our guide to sending a WhatsApp message without saving the number covers every method on iPhone, Android and the web, and the click to chat method explains how to build a link with a pre-filled message.

The only reason to save a contact first is if you want WhatsApp to show you the person's profile photo and name as an extra signal. For a simple "is this number on WhatsApp" check, you do not need to. A missing photo proves nothing on its own, though: it is one of the ambiguous signs covered in how to know if someone blocked you on WhatsApp.

How to know if a number is still active on WhatsApp

A number that shows up on WhatsApp is not always an account someone still uses. Three signals help:

  • The chat is locked. If you open a chat with an account that is deactivated, WhatsApp disables the message field at the bottom of the screen and shows a notice that the account is no longer active (How to find and invite contacts, Android).
  • The photo belongs to someone else. Phone numbers get recycled by mobile carriers. If the previous owner never deleted their WhatsApp account, the number can still show their profile photo and About text. WhatsApp removes that old data when an account unused for 45 days is reactivated on a new phone (About seeing your phone number already in WhatsApp).
  • Your messages never get a second tick. One grey tick means sent; the second tick appears once the message reaches the person's phone or a linked device. A message that stays on one tick can mean the phone is off, or that you were blocked, as explained in our guide to WhatsApp grey ticks.

What a WhatsApp number lookup cannot tell you

WhatsApp's Help Center describes no reverse lookup. The official ways to reach someone are the search bar, your synced contacts, a wa.me link, a QR code or their exact username. Here is what stays out of reach.

  • Who owns the number. You see what the owner shows. By default, any user can see a person's profile photo, while the About text and last seen are visible to their contacts, and anyone can change these in Settings > Privacy (How to change your privacy settings). WhatsApp also lists the reasons a profile can look empty: privacy settings, contacts that need to be resynced, a block, or the fact that the person has never messaged you or saved you (Can't see a contact's profile information).
  • A number behind a username. Usernames are rolling out gradually. With a username, a person's phone number is not visible to anyone who does not already have it saved, and WhatsApp says there isn't a searchable directory of usernames (About usernames). The first time someone without your number in their contacts gets a message from you, WhatsApp may show them the country your number is registered in. Our guide to WhatsApp usernames explains how they work.
  • Anything through an outside tool. WhatsApp's Terms of Service say you must not, directly or through automated means, collect information of or about its users in any impermissible or unauthorized manner. Tools that promise to reveal the name behind a number, or the number behind a username, sit on the wrong side of that rule.

If the number belongs to someone you know, the privacy tip runs both ways: since any user can see your profile photo by default, set Profile photo to My contacts if you do not want strangers who check your number to see it.

Validate a whole list: the WhatsApp Business API

Here is where a "WhatsApp checker" search can go wrong. People with a list of hundreds or thousands of numbers look for a bulk checker, and the tools that promise this are exactly the ones that get accounts banned.

The compliant way to validate a large list is the WhatsApp Business API. When you send an approved message to an opted-in contact, Meta's Cloud API returns a delivery status. A "delivered" status confirms the number is active on WhatsApp. A failure comes with an error code: code 131026, "Unable to deliver message", lists among its possible reasons that the recipient's phone number is not a WhatsApp phone number, along with an outdated app or terms not accepted (Meta's error codes, read on November 4, 2026). So your list gets validated as a natural by-product of your first legitimate message, not by pinging strangers.

If you run a business account, note that the API is not a setting inside the app: it is reached through a provider. Our guides explain how the WhatsApp Business API works and which providers give access to the WhatsApp Business API.

With Kanal, that happens automatically: send a campaign or a welcome flow to your opted-in Shopify customers, and the dashboard shows delivered, read, and failed per contact. You end up with a clean, reachable list without ever touching a grey-hat checker tool.

Why bulk "WhatsApp checker" tools are risky

Third-party tools that scrape or brute-check thousands of numbers to filter "WhatsApp actives" are tempting, but they carry real cost:

  • They go against WhatsApp's terms of service, which forbid collecting information about users in an unauthorized manner, directly or through automated means, and list bulk messaging and auto-messaging among impermissible uses.
  • The same terms let WhatsApp suspend or terminate access for anyone who violates them, and the number you check from is the one at risk of being banned.
  • Messaging the numbers you "found" means contacting people who never opted in. WhatsApp's Business Policy only allows a business to contact people who gave it their number or username and opted in to its messages, and data protection rules such as GDPR apply on top.

The search demand for a "WhatsApp number filter" is real, but the only durable way to use it is on numbers you already have a relationship with.

The right way to build a reachable list

If your goal is a WhatsApp list that actually converts, the move is not to check strangers' numbers, it is to collect opt-ins and let the API validate them:

  1. Ask customers to opt in to WhatsApp on your Shopify store, for example with a pop-up.
  2. Send your first opted-in message through the WhatsApp Business API.
  3. Read the delivery statuses to see which numbers are reachable.

That gives you a validated, consented, ban-safe list, which is worth far more than any harvested one.

Conclusion

For a single number, the search bar of your Chats tab and the free wa.me link are the only WhatsApp checkers you need, and neither reveals more than the owner chooses to share. For your customer list, skip the bulk checker tools entirely and let the WhatsApp Business API validate reachability as you send compliant, opted-in messages. If you run a Shopify store and want a clean WhatsApp list that stays deliverable, book a demo with Kanal or install the app from the Shopify App Store.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a WhatsApp number lookup?

Not a public one. WhatsApp offers no directory where you type a number and see who owns it. The lookup built into the app works one number at a time: type the number in the search bar of your Chats tab, and WhatsApp lets you open a chat if the number uses WhatsApp, or offers to invite it if it does not. WhatsApp's Help Center says the same of usernames: there isn't a searchable directory.

Is there a free WhatsApp number checker?

Yes, and it is built into WhatsApp. The Chats tab search and the wa.me link (https://wa.me/ followed by the number in international format) are both free and both answer one question: does this number have an active WhatsApp account? Third-party "number checker" tools that test lists of numbers are not made by WhatsApp, and automated collection of information about users is against WhatsApp's terms.

How do I know if a number has WhatsApp without saving it?

Type the number in the search bar of your Chats tab, or open the wa.me link in any browser, for example https://wa.me/33612345678 (country code, no plus sign, no spaces). Neither method adds the number to your contacts. If the number uses WhatsApp, you can open a chat with it directly.

How do I know if a number is still active on WhatsApp?

Open a chat with it. If the account is deactivated, WhatsApp disables the message field and shows a notice that the account is no longer active. Be careful with recycled numbers: if a previous owner never deleted their account, the number can still show that person's photo and About text. WhatsApp removes that old data when an account unused for 45 days is reactivated on a new phone.

Can I find out who owns a WhatsApp number?

Only what the owner chooses to show. By default, any WhatsApp user can see someone's profile photo, while the About text and last seen are visible to their contacts. Anyone can hide these in Privacy settings, and people with a username can keep their number hidden from anyone who has not saved it. WhatsApp does not reveal who owns a number.

Can I check if many numbers are on WhatsApp at once?

Not with a consumer tool, and you should be careful. Bulk "WhatsApp number checker" or "number filter" tools that test thousands of numbers automatically go against WhatsApp's terms and put the checking number at risk of a ban. The compliant way to validate a customer list is the WhatsApp Business API: when you message an opted-in contact, the API returns a delivery status, or error 131026 when the message cannot be delivered.

Does checking a number notify the person?

No message is sent when you search a number, open a wa.me link or save a contact. The person only receives something if you actually send a message or call.

Is it legal to check if a number is on WhatsApp?

Checking a single number you already have a reason to contact is fine. Scraping or bulk-checking numbers you have no relationship with goes against WhatsApp's terms, and for businesses WhatsApp's Business Policy requires both the person's number and their opt-in before any message. Work from consent, not from harvested lists.
