It covers the plan you need, what POS Pro adds, the in-person card rates, the hardware, and a worked example for one store and for three. The online side of each plan is covered in our guide to Shopify pricing.

How much does Shopify POS cost?

The total is the sum of three things, as Shopify's POS pricing FAQ puts it: your plan, your transaction fees and your POS Pro locations. Hardware comes on top, unless you only take payments with Tap to Pay.

The POS pricing page also showed an introductory offer: 3 days free, then $1 a month for 3 months on Basic, Grow and Advanced. It is a promotion and can change.

Each plan's card also lists who can use the POS. Basic says "Limited staff can access POS", while Grow and Advanced list unlimited POS logins. For the admin, the pricing page gives no additional staff accounts on Basic, 5 on Grow and 15 on Advanced, and 10 inventory locations on each of the three.

Which Shopify plan does Shopify POS need?

Any paid plan. Shopify's Help Center says all paid plans include some in-person selling features, and that POS Pro is an add-on billed per location. Three special cases:

  • Starter. The Starter plan can't add POS Pro, and Shopify says it isn't available to new stores. Our guide to the Shopify Starter plan explains what it still offers.
  • Retail. The Help Center documents a Retail plan with one POS Pro location and the Spotlight theme. It had no price on the US pricing pages we read, so we don't quote one.
  • Plus. POS Pro is included for 20 locations, or up to 200 with Shopify Payments, according to the pricing page. Our Shopify Plus pricing guide covers the rest of that plan.

Below Plus, the POS Pro yearly page notes that you may have up to 10 retail locations.

What is included without POS Pro, and what does POS Pro add?

Many guides call the included tier "POS Lite". Shopify's POS pricing page calls it casual in-person selling, and its Help Center calls it the in-person selling features included with all paid plans. Here is how the two compare on the features that matter most for a shop:

The included features cover a market stall, a pop-up or an occasional event. A permanent shop with a team, exchanges and online orders picked up at the counter usually needs POS Pro on that location. Shopify's POS pricing page recommends it for stores with a lot of foot traffic, several levels of staff or a large catalog.

How is POS Pro billed?

POS Pro is priced at $89 a month per location. One answer in the same page's FAQ describes those $89 as billed yearly, while the separate POS Pro yearly page lists a discounted price of $67 a month per location over a 12-month term, as of November 4, 2026. Check the price shown in your admin before you subscribe.

The rules from the Help Center:

  • Monthly or yearly. On Retail, Basic, Grow and Advanced you choose a monthly or yearly cycle; Plus uses a 30-day cycle only. All POS Pro locations must use the same billing schedule.
  • A separate 30-day cycle. POS Pro's billing cycle starts when you activate it and runs separately from your plan's. Adding a location mid-cycle can be prorated, and a downgrade takes effect at the end of the cycle.
  • Refund windows. Outside Brazil, you can get a refund by downgrading within 7 days of the start of a monthly cycle, or within 30 days of the annual billing date.
  • Trials. When the POS Pro trial ends, you must select POS Pro yourself to keep it; otherwise your locations go back to the included features. A location added after the trial doesn't get its own trial.

The POS Pro yearly offer has its own terms, according to its page:

  • It is open to merchants who are new to POS Pro, including those on a POS Pro trial.
  • You pay $67 a month per location for 12 months, not the year upfront. If you cancel early, the remaining months are still due, and the subscription renews automatically.
  • Each location subscribed within 7 days of the first can get a Verifone Victa Mobile for a $10 activation fee. The offer page gives it a regular price of $449, while the hardware store listed it at $399 on November 4, 2026.
  • A $200 credit applies when a single location reaches $10,000 in Shopify Payments sales within 90 days.

What are Shopify POS card rates in person?

With Shopify Payments, the rate falls as the plan rises. The pricing page listed these rates on November 4, 2026:

PlanIn-person card rateIn-person manual (keyed) rateOnline standard card rate
Basic2.6% + 10¢3.5% + 10¢2.9% + 30¢
Grow2.5% + 10¢3.5% + 10¢2.7% + 30¢
Advanced2.4% + 10¢3.5% + 10¢2.5% + 30¢
Plus2.3% + 10¢3.4% + 10¢2.25% + 30¢

What else affects the fee on an in-person sale:

  • Tap to Pay. On iPhone (iPhone XS or newer) and on Android (Android 13 or higher, with NFC), it is available on every Shopify plan in the United States and charged at your in-person rates. It takes contactless cards and digital wallets, and needs Shopify Payments. On iPhone, Puerto Rico is excluded.
  • No third-party transaction fees. Shopify's billing article states that transaction fees don't apply to POS orders or to manual payment methods.
  • External terminals. Shopify's card readers require Shopify Payments and a paid plan. With another provider's terminal, set up as a custom payment method, Shopify POS shows the payment status but not the transaction details, and Shopify doesn't charge transaction fees on those payments, according to the card reader guide. Your terminal provider's own fees apply.

How much does Shopify POS hardware cost?

The POS pricing FAQ says you need a smartphone or tablet and a Shopify card reader to start. Shopify's US hardware store listed three card readers on November 4, 2026:

Card readerPriceWhat it does
Tap & Chip Card Reader$49Small reader with Bluetooth and USB, for mobile and countertop selling
POS Terminal$349Countertop terminal with a customer display, for tap, chip and swipe payments
Verifone Victa Mobile$399Handheld that runs Shopify POS, takes payments and scans barcodes, and converts to countertop

The card reader guide lists the Tap & Chip Reader for the United States only, and notes that Shopify POS Go is no longer available for sale. Counter accessories from the accessories collection on the same date:

Three rules from Shopify's pages complete the budget:

  • Shipping and returns. The hardware store FAQ lists free ground shipping on all orders and 30-day returns with free prepaid return labels.
  • Warranty. Shopify hardware comes with a 1-year warranty, or 2 years with POS Pro, according to the POS features page.
  • Devices. Shopify POS runs only on iOS and Android, not on computers or Amazon Fire tablets. The card reader guide asks for an iPad of generation 5 or later on iPadOS 15.1 or higher, an iPhone 7 or later on iOS 15.1 or higher, or an Android device on version 10 or higher.

What does Shopify POS cost for one store and for three?

The stores are fictional. Prices are the US prices read on November 4, 2026, with all in-person card payments made through Shopify Payments, before taxes and apps.

One shop. A brand opens one permanent shop that takes $20,000 a month in card payments over 400 sales (an average of $50). It wants exchanges and pickup in store, so it adds POS Pro.

  • Plan and POS Pro: Basic at $39 + POS Pro at $89 = $128 a month.
  • Card fees: 2.6% of $20,000 = $520, plus 400 × $0.10 = $40, so $560 a month.
  • Monthly total: $688.
  • One counter kit: POS Terminal $349 + Eddy Tablet Stand $149 + OmniLink Receipt Printer $289 + CD4 16" Cash Drawer $139 + DS2208 Scanner $209 = $1,135, with a tablet you already own.
  • First year: 12 × $688 + $1,135 = $9,391. On POS Pro yearly at $67, the store saves 12 × $22 = $264.

Three shops. The same brand runs three shops with $60,000 a month in card payments over 1,200 sales, and wants admin accounts for its store managers.

BasicGrow
Plan$39$105
POS Pro, 3 locations$267$267
Card fees in person2.6% × $60,000 + 1,200 × $0.10 = $1,6802.5% × $60,000 + 1,200 × $0.10 = $1,620
Monthly total$1,986$1,992
Admin staff accountsNone beyond the owner5

Calculation from the POS pricing page and pricing page, read on November 4, 2026.

At this volume the two plans cost almost the same: Grow's lower rate covers its $66 higher monthly price once in-person card sales reach $66,000 a month ($66 ÷ 0.1%). Online sales tilt it further, since Grow's online rate is 2.7% + 30¢ against 2.9% + 30¢ on Basic. Grow also brings 5 staff accounts. With POS Pro yearly at $67, the three locations would cost $201 instead of $267, or $792 less over the year. Three counter kits add 3 × $1,135 = $3,405 in hardware.

How do you check your own Shopify POS cost?

  1. Count your locations. Note which ones are permanent shops that need POS Pro and which are pop-ups or events where the included features are enough.
  2. Pull your in-person volume. Estimate monthly card sales and the number of payments per location, and apply your plan's in-person rate and 10¢ per payment.
  3. Compare two plans. Price your volume on Basic and on Grow, adding online sales at each plan's online rate, as in the example above.
  4. Price the hardware. List one kit per register from the hardware store, or start with Tap to Pay on the phones you have.
  5. Choose the billing cycle. Compare $89 monthly with POS Pro yearly at $67 if you are new to POS Pro and expect to keep the location for 12 months.
  6. Activate POS Pro per location. In your Shopify admin, go to Sales channels, then Point of Sale, then Settings, then POS Pro Subscription, and click Add POS Pro on the location, following the Help Center steps.

Where does WhatsApp fit after an in-store sale?

Shopify POS keeps a customer's online and in-store order history in one profile, and the POS features page lists marketing opt-ins collected at checkout. That opt-in is Shopify's own; a WhatsApp conversation with the customer needs its own consent. At the counter, a WhatsApp QR code lets a customer open a chat with your store in one scan, and you can ask for their WhatsApp opt-in at that moment.

Once store customers are on WhatsApp, the follow-ups are the ones a shop already does by hand: an invitation to an in-store launch or a private sale for customers who live nearby, a review request after the visit, an offer on a complementary product. Our playbook of drive-to-store WhatsApp campaigns gives message templates for each of these.

Kanal, our WhatsApp marketing app for Shopify, runs these follow-ups: WhatsApp campaigns sent to segments, review collection on WhatsApp, post-purchase offers and a shared team inbox where store staff answer questions, with the revenue of each message tracked. Its pop-up and chat widget open WhatsApp on your online store to collect opt-ins there too. Kanal is a paid app: on the Kanal pricing page, read on November 4, 2026, Pro costs €89 a month, Scale €149 and Business €350, with RCS and SMS included from Scale. Meta bills WhatsApp messages on top, as explained in our WhatsApp Business pricing guide.
